Case Study: SIJ Group's Migration to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
OUR SERVICES
The Client: SIJ Group, a leading European producer of stainless steel and special steels, has been leveraging Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) and Value Chain Planning (VCP) since 2010. In 2024 SIJ migrated their EBS environment to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), aiming to enhance speed, agility, and security during their future upgrade from version 12.1.3 to 12.2.12.
The Situation: SIJ faced several challenges with their legacy systems, including performance issues, limited scalability, and high maintenance costs. With a unique IT stack comprising multiple ERP applications, operating systems, and older database versions, an overhaul was necessary to keep up with their growing business demands.
The Decision: Following a comprehensive system review and educating SIJ on the benefits and economic advantages of OCI, the IT leadership was presented with the findings from the Total Cost of Transformation Assessment (TCOT). The assessment included costs associated with each option. Based on the analysis, the following recommendations were made:
The Implementation:
The migration process was executed in several phases:
1. Assessment and Planning: Detailed assessment of SIJ’s existing infrastructure and planning the migration strategy.
2. Compatibility Investigation: Thoroughly investigate compatibility issues with tightly integrated applications and strict latency requirements.
3. Proof of Concept: Conduct a proof-of-concept migration to demonstrate system functionality and performance in the OCI environment.
4. Migration Execution: Utilize OCI’s rapid cloning capabilities to create and deploy new environments quickly.
5. Security Enhancement: Configure OCI Load Balancers for HTTPS and integrate external nodes to ensure secure access and seamless connectivity.
6. Disaster Recovery (DR): Implement OCI’s disaster recovery capabilities to ensure high availability and quick recovery from potential disruptions. This includes using old on premise resources as Disaster Recovery environment to maintain business continuity.
7. Internal MES System: Utilize Oracle GoldenGate for logical disaster recovery of SIJ’s Manufacturing Execution System (MES), ensuring real-time data replication and minimal latency.
8. Multicloud Latency Improvement: Enhance multicloud connectivity with Azure to reduce latency and improve performance across SIJ’s cloud environments.
Results:
The migration to OCI resulted in significant improvements for SIJ:
• Enhanced Performance: OCI’s scalable infrastructure provided the necessary resources to handle increased workloads efficiently.
• Improved Agility: Rapid cloning capabilities reduced downtime and accelerated the upgrade process from EBS 12.1.3 to 12.2.12.
• Cost Savings: Lower maintenance costs and optimized resource utilization led to substantial cost savings.
• Increased Security: SSL termination, HTTPS configuration, and integration of external nodes ensured secure data transit and protected sensitive information.
• High Availability: OCI’s disaster recovery capabilities ensured high availability and quick recovery from potential disruptions.
• Real-Time Data Replication: Oracle GoldenGate enabled real-time data replication for SIJ’s MES system, ensuring minimal latency and consistent data integrity.
• Improved Multicloud Performance: Enhanced connectivity with Azure reduced latency and improved performance across SIJ’s multicloud environments
Future Outlook:
Looking ahead, SIJ plans to leverage OCI’s advanced features to further enhance their operations. The integration of AI and machine learning into their EBS environment will enable predictive analytics, smarter decision-making, and automated workflows. Additionally, OCI’s continuous innovation in security, scalability, and performance will support SIJ’s growth and adaptation to dynamic market demands.
Conclusion:
SIJ’s successful migration to OCI demonstrates the power of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure in transforming enterprise operations. By leveraging OCI’s advanced features, SIJ achieved enhanced performance, agility, and security, positioning themselves for future growth and success.
